Natural Pain Relief with Essential Oils by Kelly Corbett
At various points in time, we have all experienced physical pain. According to the National Institute of Health, “pain affects more Americans than Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer combined and is cited as the most common reason Americans turn to our heath care system”. Essential Oils can be used for natural pain relief.
Symptom Relieving Pharmaceuticals
Symptom relieving pharmaceuticals certainly have their place in emergency situations or as a temporary response to pain. However addiction to prescription pain medications has been cited as an epidemic for many years and and everyday in the United States there are at least 44 deaths from overdose of prescription pain killers.
Pain Natural Body Process
Pain, from another thought process or angle, is really a healthy and helpful warning system that alerts us to a problem within our body. When you begin to experience pain, it is important to take the time to discover the source of the problem and how it might be addressed with natural non toxic solutions.
Essential Oils A Natural Approach
Essential Oils are one such natural approach and work wonderfully on pain in many ways.
Reduce Inflammation
First, Essential Oils work by reducing inflammation at the tissue level, one of the main cause of pain. Most Essential Oils are anti inflammatory. Wintergreen, Vetiver and Copaiba have been traditionally used for hundreds of years to effectively soothe inflammatory conditions.
Wintergreen is an anti inflammatory powerhouse and is invaluable when dealing with pain. Its key constituent is Methyl Salicylate, a single teaspoon of Methyl Salicylate is the equivalent to approximately 23, 300 mg tablets of aspirin. Essential Oils are very concentrated. One drop of Essential Oils applied to the bottom of your feet will reach every cell in your body within minutes. Always start with a small amount and add more if necessary. Less is more when it come to essentials oils!
Cool and Calm
Vetiver, like Peppermint, is cooling and calming to the system, helping to take the heat out of inflamed tissues. It has always been used successfully to ease arthritis aches and pains.
Copaiba is arguable the strongest anti inflammatory known to man. It is particularly effective against arthritis and has been used for centuries by the tribesmen in the Amazon. Much of the Copaiba on the market today is adulterated to extend the yield.
Know Your Source
It is important to know and trust your essential oil source.
Block Pain Signals
Peppermint has been shown in studies to be extremely effective in blocking the pathways for the transmission of pain signals and to provide relief from headaches, migraines and head and neck tension.
Many Essential Oils are known to be analgesic, such as Wintergreen, Helichrysum and Clove. Clove has been widely used as a natural anesthetic in dentistry and has anti inflammatory properties.
Anti Oxidants
Having a healthy dose of anti oxidants helps bring the whole body into balance. If you are new to holistic healing you will be pleasantly surprised to discover the side effects of this approach are often a resolution of other imbalances you are experiencing.
Oxygen and Nutrition
Another reason Essential Oils are very effective at reducing pain is due to their very small molecular size. Essential Oils are tiny enough to easily pass right through the cell membrane, thereby providing a bust of oxygen to the cells and carrying nutrition in with them and pushing waste products out. This is also one of the ways massage works it increases oxygen flow to the tissues. so be sure to find a qualified massage therapist that uses high quality unadulterated oils in their treatments. You will not be disappointed!

Always remember, if your body is of balance, put it back in to balance. The plant world has provided you with everything you need to do this. Eat well, think well and use your oils!
